MERLOT RESERVE
Chateau Grand Traverse Merlot Reserve is a masterclass in restraint, precision, and place. This limited-production wine is the result of meticulous vineyard management, small-lot fermentation, and extended aging—crafted to express the complexity and ageability that cool-climate Merlot can achieve in the hands of a patient winemaker.
Unlike the lush, fruit-bomb Merlots of warmer regions, this bottling favors finesse over opulence. Grown on the southern-facing slopes of Old Mission Peninsula, our estate Merlot ripens slowly in Michigan’s long, temperate growing season, benefitting from the moderating effects of Lake Michigan. The result is a wine of structure and tension, balancing ripe dark fruit with natural acidity and savory undertones rarely found in domestic Merlot.
Vinified in small fermenters, the wine was aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels for over 18 months to enhance textural depth and aromatic complexity without overwhelming the fruit. Deep garnet in hue, the wine opens with layered aromas of black cherry, cassis, cedar, and baking spice. On the palate, it delivers a core of dark plum and brambly blackberry wrapped in refined tannins and lifted by hints of graphite, clove, and dried herb. The finish is long, dry, and expressive—carried by a graceful tension that invites both contemplation and pairing.
This is Merlot as it was meant to be: honest, site-driven, and long on character. Whether enjoyed now with decanting or laid down for a decade, this Reserve offering speaks to the aging potential and rising ambition of Northern Michigan red wine.
Terroir Insight:
Planted on glacial moraine soils with excellent drainage and sun exposure, our Merlot vines benefit from consistent airflow and long daylight hours, yielding low yields and intense fruit concentration. Cool nights throughout September and October preserve freshness and extend hang time, resulting in phenolic maturity at moderate sugar levels. The hallmark of this terroir is balance—fruit, acidity, and tannin working in harmony rather than competition.
Cellaring Note:
- This wine was built with longevity in mind. While it offers structure and depth now, it will continue to evolve gracefully over the next 7–12 years.
- Expect tertiary notes of dried fig, leather, forest floor, and tobacco to emerge with age, softening the tannins and enriching the wine’s complexity.
- For optimal enjoyment in its youth, decant for at least 45 minutes before serving.
